A garage is, without a doubt, one of the most preferred construction projects for adding value to a home. A garage is a terrific alternative whether you need a space for your automobiles, an extra building around your home, extra storage, or any other reason.
However, if you are planning to build or buy a garage, there are a few important questions you should ask. That is especially true if you have not just one, but two cars.
One of the most frequently asked questions coming from property owners is, “how big should a garage be if I have two cars?“
The ideal car garage size
Your garage should be large enough to accommodate the two vehicles you intend to keep there, and then some. It should be located on a level lot with easy access. It should have plenty of light. It should be close to other buildings like your house so it will be convenient to use as a place to work on projects.
Some fancy homeowners think it should have electric power, good telephone service, and cable TV. And, if possible, a washer, dryer, and a concrete driveway.
Of course, all this depends on how much money you are willing to spend. If you are like most homeowners, you would rather keep it simple but usable.
What should be the length and width of a 2-car garage?
The perfect length is dependent on the size of your cars and what you intend to do inside the two-car garage in addition to parking. Your garage can quickly become cramped if you add an ATV, a motorcycle, or even a few bicycles. Install some racks on the walls or a workbench, and see how much floor space you save.
A car’s average width is roughly 6 to 6.5 feet. Add a few feet on each side for getting in and out of a vehicle, and you will be close to the minimum garage size of 20 feet. Experts suggest going at least 24” wide if your property has the room and your city permits it.
When your automobile is parked within the garage, you will appreciate the extra width for going in and out. If you cannot go with a 24’24’ wide garage, a 22” wide garage will provide you a little more room to work with.
What about the height?
In a two-car garage, the average ceiling height is roughly eight feet, while the standard garage door is seven feet tall. If you plan on storing a full-sized pickup truck or van in your garage, you may need to go with a larger two-car garage and garage door size.
Of course, the higher the garage ceiling is, the more storage space you can have. However, you should check with your city officials as to what the maximum allowable height for garages is.
