Much has been said about a barndominium’s beauty, longevity, and usefulness, but people really want to know if it is indeed cheaper to build a barndo a traditional house.
Why do they say that barndos cheaper upfront? It is because barndos are made of premade kits that are manufactured off-site and then installed on site.
However, that does not mean a barndominium will always be cheaper. There is always that possibility that you would spend more on barndos than you would in a traditional house.
In this article, we will take a look at the costs of construction for both types of homes.
Building a traditional house
On average, barndos are cheaper than a conventional house. Conventional houses cost from $110 up to $150 per square foot. On the other hand, barndos can fetch somewhere between $60 and $100.
This amount could differ quite a bit depending on how it is built. A complete spectrum of costs might go as low as $110 per square foot for a simple 1500 square foot home totaling just a little over $172,000. Or, it could go all the way into the $400,000 range for a bigger house with more amenities.
A huge part of that will go into the outer framing of the walls, including windows and doors, and then concealed with brick, vinyl siding, or stucco. Of course, you add the roof.
Meanwhile, constructing a barndo costs significantly less. Some barndo builders even offer unlimited exterior doors, engineered foundation, premium windows, and erection of a metal shell for a total of just $38,000.
If you are a DIY person and are building the interior yourself, you will likely save a lot by taking advantage of this option.
Building a barndo
On the other hand, a barndominium will cost you anywhere from $90 to $130 per square foot. That is for a finished turnkey build. On average, a 2,000 square foot barndominium will cost around $250,000, similar to other types of homes out there.
Several companies also sell barndo kits. A bare bones shell can sell for as low as $10,000 for a 900 sq ft kit.
