Do I Need A Concrete Slab for a Steel Building?

Like everything else in life, a metal building’s integrity depends on its foundation. That is why for developers, formulating the correct foundation strategy before erecting a steel building is necessary for the structure to last long.

The most popular foundation used by developers when erecting a steel building is concrete. It is a section of poured concrete with an augmented grade beam that spreads the load from bearing walls into the foundation. A concrete slab foundation eventually becomes the floor of the steel building.

Concrete slab foundations are popular because of their quick, simple, and economical construction that does not resort to piers or footings, making for a simpler development.

Planning your concrete slab

So, if you want your concrete foundation to last long, here is a list of what to consider.

  1. Thickness

Your concrete slab must be at least 4 inches thick, but if your purpose for building a steel building is to store heavy equipment, then its thickness should be 5 to 6 inches. Use 4000 psi concrete for these instances.

  1. Sizing

Slab sizing must be at least 2 inches longer in width than your steel building.

  1. Footing requirements

For great results, it is a must to pour perimeter footings together with the slab. Also, they should be at least 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

Slab location

Once you figure out the size of the building, you need to consider the following.

  1. Property line and setback

Check your plat map first for your property to ensure you do not unwittingly plan to build on a spot that is not within your property line. Also, most districts require that your steel structure be set back a particular distance from that property line.

  1. Accessibility

Next, consider how and where people will most quickly access the steel building. The access point to the building should be direct, and that there is no landscaping blocking the way. Make sure that your building is within fair proximity to a primary electrical supply.

  1. Water control

As much as possible, your steel building should be on high ground.

Building Permits

Most people want to skip this step, but it should be first on your to-do list when you want to construct a building. Do not start your construction project without the necessary permits to avoid paying penalties.
